“Dunya” is Bibi Tanga & The Selenites’ 3rd album. I had never heard of him before, but was immediately intrigued with Track one “The Moon” which sounds nothing like what I’d expected judging from the cover and the artist’s name. I love listening to an album that I can’t place, where elements are discernible but the whole is not easily categorizable. Soul, electro, funk, trip hop, jazz are a few… It sounds like it could have been made by a DJ, with the disparate styles that he uses and layers, and certain amount of repetition, but is more organic.

“Dunya” means existence in Songa, the language of the Central African Republic, where he is originally from. The Selenites (From Bibi Tanga & The Selenites) were the moon-dwelling civilization in HG Wells’ ‘The First Men In The Moon’. The music doesnt make you travel very far, as the references would suggest, but it does achieve a kind of spacey, dreamy and even dancey quality of some of the tracks.

Lucho Bermudez was considered one of the most important interpreters and composers of Colombian popular music of the 20th century. Dont remember how I got hold of this song “Colombia Tierra Querida”, but its so catchy. Beautiful female singer, but dont know who… Anyone?
