This playlist was inspired by a current London exhibit of Malick Sidibé photos curated by Tristan Hoare at Lichfield Studios. Sidibé, a portrait photographer in Bamako, Mali, captured iconic images of the residents of the newly independent Bamako in the 60’s and 70’s. This period of newly found freedom saw the flourishing of music across many West African countries. Many of these bands were state sponsored and formed an important part of the new nations’ cultural identity and pride, such Balla et Ses Balladins and Bembeya Jazz National of Guinea.

Much of this music combined native West African music traditions with Cuban and American influences, creating an upbeat style that is still as infectious today as it was back then. Orchestra Baobab is a good example (track 3), a 13 piece Senegalese band and one of the few groups to resurface after their success in the 70’s.

The pervasive sound is celebratory, with entrancing Afro-Cuban rhythms and beautiful vocal harmonies. In this mix, we combine both contemporary and past treasures that capture this spirit.

Selected tracks include some of the best contemporary African bands such as Bonga from Angola, Cheikh Lo from Senegal and Salif Keita from Mali and from bygone dance orchestra’s such as Super Mama Djombo from Guinea-Bissau and Franco & OK Jazz Orchestra from the Congo.

Charlie Gillett was my mentor and friend over the past 5 years which I knew him. His passing on March 17 marks the end of an era, not only for me, but for the thousands of people around the world who listened to him on the radio over the past 40 years of his career as a music radio presenter, music journalist and record producer. The privilege of listening to records with Charlie once a week, helping to select the songs for his radio shows, was not only a truly invaluable music education but also a cherished time of being with a once in a lifetime kind of mentor, a person who I came to deeply love and respect. Many of the songs featured on museradio.fm were discovered through him. This very rough first podcast is inspired by him.

The main musical focus of this podcast is Lhasa de Sela, one of my favorite all time singers. Her passing on January 1, 2010 from breast cancer, at the age of 37 and shortly after the release of her 3rd album Lhasa, was a great tragedy. I had the opportunity to meet her with Charlie a few months ago when she came to record a session on his show for BBC Radio 3. Hopefully it will be available to listen to again soon. Everyone of her three albums are beautiful from start to finish, her voice and lyrics resonating with such feeling and beauty.

Both Charlie and Lhasa left this world too soon, with still so much more to give. And yet, they already gave the world so much, leaving an indelible mark, for which we can only be grateful. Their legacy will live on and be discovered for a long time to come.

Buy any or all of Lhasa’s albums on CD and Ethiopiques Vol. 21 from our museradio.fm Amazon Store.
