Nina Simone released her first album in 1957, “Little Girl Blue” or “Jazz As Played in an Exclusive Side Street Club”, when she still had aspirations to be a classical concert pianist. The focus is very much on her piano playing on this album which is interesting to listen to, when most of us have focused more on her voice. I was familiar with many of the songs on this album, but heard “Plain Gold Ring” for the first time, an exquisite piece written by George Stone (who I cant seem to find out much about on the net) and covered by various people, including Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Kimbra, an Australian singer whose version Ive uploaded after Nina’s.
